about

I enjoy watching X-Men movies, and the incorporation of multiple locations has always been a fun aspect. In the comics, these creative settings stand out even more. Therefore, for my midterm project, I decided to investigate the locations in the Uncanny X-Men comics. This project aims to explore the various settings depicted in Uncanny X-Men comics, with a primary focus on distinguishing the fictional places therein.

processes

The data was processed using the online tool OpenRefine, encompassing approximately 200 values. Within these values, variations in expression for similar places were identified, including real life places, fictional places within existing lands, non-existing lands, and spaces or multiverses. To manage this diverse dataset, a text facet was generated to cluster the locations. Both automated and manual methods were employed in this clustering process using the provided tool. Subsequently, the facet was exported for additional visualization and mapping purposes.

presentation

The visualizations are primarily presented through embedding. To create the interactive map, I utilized the online mapping tool ArcGIS. Google Maps facilitated the acquisition of latitude and longitude coordinates for each location to be marked on the map. I opted to directly display two key figures on the map: frequency and authenticity, accompanied by labels for each location. The bubble chart was crafted using the visualization tool Flourish, consolidating all US locations to provide an overarching depiction of the countries and larger regions involved.

When formatting the website, I chose to position the interactive map prominently at the top and center. This decision was made to assist viewers in swiftly grasping the purpose and results of this project.

Significance

This project helps create a better understanding how American comics pick and even create places. Using digital methods to explore the locations depicted in the Uncanny X-Men comics transcends mere data analysis. These methods allow us to delve into the cultural significance and portrayal of these scenes, deepening our comprehension of narrative techniques and cultural contexts within comic book storytelling. Through platforms like interactive maps and visualizations, we share our research findings, engaging with both fans and scholars of the X-Men series to foster collaboration and discussion. This interdisciplinary approach not only underscores the importance of digital arts and humanities but also showcases how innovative methodologies can bridge the gap between quantitative analysis and qualitative interpretation, leading to a more holistic understanding of popular culture artifacts in the digital realm.
